OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
“Do or do not, there is no try” - Yoda, Jedi Master
Our goal, as a company known for reusable and eco-friendly products, is to function as sustainably as possible. We do so not only through the manufacturing of our products, the ideas we present, and the companies we work along-side of, but also through the knowledge and teachings that you, our customers put out into the world.
Manufacturing Level
The base of everything we do as a company is the products that we put out into the world. All of our cotton bags are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified, which means the entire supply chain, from the growing of cotton through the manufacturing meets the strictest environmental standards. The organic cotton is grown and harvested locally to the factory in India, and it remains unprocessed through all of manufacturing, meaning that harmful pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and toxic bleaches are NEVER used. Any dyes used on our bags (colored bags only) have also been GOTS approved for environmental standards, and contain low levels of chemicals commonly found in dyes such as heavy metals, Azo, and formaldehyde. Our jute bags are similarly as sustainable, through both their growing and manufacturing process. Jute, more commonly recognized as burlap, is a natural grass fiber. The jute plants are rain-fed, meaning they require no irrigation, no fertilizer, and no pesticides to grow, making them one of the most environmentally friendly options out there.
As part of the textile industry, we’re also very cognizant of the amount of fabric waste that’s very prevalent throughout the entire system. We mindfully design our products to create as little textile waste as possible, and are even working to repurpose any “scrap” fabric into future upcycled products.
For reusable silicone products, our Silikomart products are made of 100% pure platinum grade silicone. Silicone is made of silica, which is a compound most often found in sand, and in its pure form is recyclable. Silikomart runs their company off of sustainable energy and solar power, as well as utilizing sustainable environmental resources and limiting their waste.
Packaging Level
As for our own input into the sustainability movement, Simple Ecology is very mindful of any resources that are being consumed. We receive almost all of our products by way of ship to a local port, as ships emit far less CO2 into the atmosphere than traveling by plane or truck.
Any materials that we send out to you are as environmentally friendly as possible for us. We never use any plastic in our packaging, meaning no bags, no air cushions, no styrofoam packing peanuts, no plastic tape, and no individually wrapped products. We utilize 100% recycled paper envelopes instead of plastic packaging, as these envelopes can easily be reused, recycled, or composted after we send them out. Any tape that we use in packaging is either paper or plant based, making it all completely biodegradable. Any paper receipts or instructional cards that come with an order is printed on recycled paper. And as cotton bags and silicone products are extremely flexible and durable, they have no need for unnecessary box fillers like air cushioning or packing peanuts.
Additionally, we reuse and repurpose almost any materials that we receive like boxes and cardboard for shipping out orders, almost nothing goes to waste. (In some cases, reused boxes may have plastic tape on them from a previous shipment, which we leave in place since it is still functional.) Anything that can not be repurposed is properly disposed of, with most items going to recycling or to compost.
Sustainability For You
Lastly, one of the most important parts of being sustainable is educating and encouraging others to be more environmentally friendly. And what’s the purpose of buying an eco-friendly product, only to have it break and go to landfill a month later? At Simple Ecology, we provide you with the highest grade materials that allow you to reduce waste for years to come. Our products are built to last with sustainable and compostable materials, and will continue to work for you far longer than you could expect from such simple ideas. We ourselves use the same products we provide for you, and have been using some of the same produce and tote bags for over 10 years now. While we’re not promising a fix-all solution to the planet’s environmental crisis, we are committed to helping you and the Earth in any way that we can, and encourage you to help others in your life to become just a little more eco-friendly, a little can go a long way!
